Recognition… Validation… Reassurance… is a social practice public art project operating across Calgary. Art as social practice enables the content -in this instance mental wellness- to be shaped by participating individuals, both for themselves & our broader community. Conceived by artist Dick Averns & supported by SITE c PROJECTS (Organization for Bipolar Affective Disorders) scores of Calgarians have attended one of many free workshops exploring mental wellness based on personal experience and aspirations. Art from this project is now exhibited citywide on public transit.
This project aims to facilitate insight & enhanced personal self-reflection, supporting individual & collective mental wellbeing. Mental illness can be lonely: a public vision for wellness actively confronts this & reduces stigma. With one-in-five Canadians facing a mental health challenge, social art practice engaging multiple audiences can make a positive impact on the way mental wellness is addressed in our world. An exhibition comprising dozens of artworks from this project is at cSPACE, 1721 29 Ave SW, Calgary from Jan 21 - Feb 3, 2020.
